Believe it or not there is a criteria for choosing foods! This list helps a lot when you are grocery shopping so jot these down and put them in a place you can reach them!

When I was in school, a lot of my instructors referred to Annmarie Colbin who is considered the food healer. She has done great work and research in the nutrition community, she is highly recognized. According to her there are 7 criteria you should follow when eating foods. Fairly easy to remember. Check it out!

1.FOODS MUST BE WHOLE

-This may be tough for individuals who are not used to eating whole foods, this means in its whole state. Foods that may be interrupted from its natural state, meaning processed cannot give you all the nutrients your body may need.

2. FOODS MUST BE FRESH AND NATURAL

-Fresh produce like fruits and vegetables are the best type of foods you can buy. Try to wean yourself off of the canned and frozen foods, it isn’t considered whole that way. The flavor and taste are at least 90% when fresh and natural.

3. FOODS MUST BE REAL

-You want them to not be processed or modified. It will not hold value in our bodies. Artificial or fake foods in our systems are damaging them. For example, if we are eating chicken for our protein and it is processed then our bodies aren’t getting that necessary amount of nutrition (protein) for that meal.

4. FOODS MUST BE LOCAL/ORGANIC/NON-GENETICALLY MODIFIED

-This is important and relates to criteria 1, 2, and 3. Buying the foods fresh from the ground, planted, and seeded are 100% organic. Organic can be costly, buy when you can though (there will be a “9” in front of the PLU number on the produce). It helps lower the chances of pesticides and chemicals in our fruits and vegetables. Local farms are the best place to buy foods seasonally.

5. FOODS MUST BE MADE WITHIN TRADITION

-By all means cook your foods within your tradition. Traditions that you grew up with. You may have to adjust recipes to make them to your liking now. But everyone loves to be joined together through food. Save recipes your parents/grandparents saved for you!

6. FOODS MUST BE BALANCED

-You should be eating a variety of foods when it comes to color, texture, taste, flavor, and shape. All foods have their different form and purpose to our bodies. Your plate should be assorted but also balanced.

7. FOODS SHOULD BE DELICIOUS!

I think this is the most important part when making foods. We want to like them, we want to take that bite and savor that taste. We want others to like our foods, we want the foods to be something we crave again! If it doesn’t taste good our bodies are completely unaccepting of it.

There you have it! When consuming foods try your best to follow these criteria’s! It will work in the long run for your mind, body, and spirit 🙂 Your meal will be marvelous when you follow the criteria listed here!!
